Ok, believe it or not I got the blogrolls pruned. I largely just took off the dead wood, although there were a few that had reverted to their rootstock that I yanked out because the colors didn't go anymore (don't you hate it when you plant a Chicago Peace and after a bad winter you get Dr. Huey?). Anyway, I still have some transplanting to do, and then I may mulch...
I awoke to an in box full of trackback spam notifications. I checked....The beasts had already been slain and the carcases dragged away. All I had to do was delete the email notifications.
How often does the damsel get to start her day with the dragon already toast?
I wish I could buy the man a beer--or a pound of M&M's®...
I happened to notice that I am closing in on 4000 comments to my blog, and was thinking about giving a prize to the lucky commenter who makes the digits show the triple zeros. But what should the prize be?
I could write a poem in the person's honor. I could write a story using their name for the main character. I could highlight their name on my blogroll somehow, the blogging version of "your name in (blinking) lights."
Please leave your suggestions* for a prize in the comments. You will also be helping some other lucky person attain the magic 4000....
Just in case anyone notices anything wonky in any of my graphics, banners or pictures, I turned on "hotlink protection" and, although everything loads ok for me, I'd appreciate it if y'all would let me know if you're having any problems...
Just in case anyone gets a trackback to a year-old post of mine, it wasn't stuck in the email sorter and then stepped on by the email delivery gnomes' hobnailed boots before they sent it to reconfiguration camp until such time as it was reintroduced to the delivery system--at least, I don't think that's what happened. I am closing the comments on some of my old posts that get repeatedly spammed, and MT is repinging the trackbacks that didn't go through (or in some cases it thought didn't go through) the first time. Of course, it could really just be another VRWC....muhahahah....
Apparently there is an intermittant problem with my blog--sometimes if you stop by via the url shortcut [http://pp.mu.nu] the topmost post is from February 20, rather than the currentest one. Because I am completely non-geekly, and I have never had this happen to my own self (even though my Mozilla homepage is that exact addy), I don't know what to tell you except to stop being lazy and type in the whole http://practicalpenumbra.mu.nu.
Well, I can see my blog and recentest posts, but apparently some of my dear readers can't. Can we have a show of hands here? If you are reading this, you are close enough....
I told you I was a CSS dummy...I had to delete the entry using the CSS script because it made my blog go wonky in IE. Thanks for the heads up, Victor!
I'm trying to play with the Barkeep's code...can't tell if it's working, though!
A day off
don't have to
If it's wrong, this post may self-destruct!
Well, the lightest color needs a little tweeking, and it's a little unsettling that it doesn't show up in color and font on the preview the way the original script does...so I changed the "light" colors since they disappeared into my gray...
I think I'm done playing now.....
Goodness!! Here I am with my first real day off since April 1st, and in screwing around with my template I managed to screw up my template....sheesh! Anyway, if you happened to stop by during mid-crisis, I apologize. All better now, and with a very happy pink! (Though it wasn't the pink that caused the meltdown, it was actually my attempt to add the Givens/Peacock logo to my sidebar that messed everthing up. But I finally got it up and linked to Trey--whew!)
Time for a nap. Wake me if anything interesting happens....
If this works the way it should, you will be reading this long after I have gone to work and long before I come home. Magic. It's cooler than you knew!
Well, thanks to the Munuvian Underground World Domination Tour 2004 Spring Membership Drive, I've finally broken down and abandoned my hand entry of my Munuvian blogroll listing and gone for the script thingy to keep track of all the new conscripts. If I like how it turns out, I might finally get around to installing the Bear's Alliance script thingy, too...
Magic is cool.
I've been playing with my pink all morning and I'm still not satisfied. Why does it look like the color I want here, but when I put it in my style sheet it's way darker or oranger or purpler? The darn rebuilding takes so long, too! I wish MT had a "preview" feature like typepad does, where you can see what it's gonna look like before you rebuild. Um, Mr. Hypothetical? Can we add that to the list?
Anyway, you all are just going to have to deal with the new hot pink until I get some more time to play with colors. And you'll like it, too, by golly!
UPDATE: Since I can't seem to find a pink I am happy with, and the few yellows I tried were too...yellow...I've gone with the minty green for now. Next up--try to figure out why the dividers in the "show comments" are lovely in IE but show up as gray depressions in Mozilla....
Due to distortions in the space/time/blog continium, you have entered the Twiblog Zone....to find current postings, click here...
Those maps seem to be messing up my display a bit (although the mess is worse with IE than with Mozilla). Thank goodness my sidebar is on the other side! Anyway, I am going to post a lot of little posts to see if that helps...
Well, I am WAY behind on my blog reading, and it'll probably take me two days to catch up, so if you haven't seen my dainty footprints at your blog recently fear not, I shall be stopping by. I'm also still trying to get my computer back into a livable condition....one of the things PK did was install a 10GB hard drive to replace my near-full 4 GB, and he changed the partitions so most (though thankfully not all) of my desktop shortcuts are pointing to the wrong drive... I had a hissy fit last night when I couldn't get Mega Solitare to load by clicking on the icon....I had to search high and low to find it and give it a new shortcut. I probably have about 20 shortcuts I'm going to have to do that for. Oh, joy.
Anyway, as promised, here's what
Dr. Frankenstein my brother did to my PC:
Took out the 2X CD-ROM and replaced it with a 40X CD-ROM.
Upgraded the RAM from 128MB to 256MB.
"Upgraded" the OS from Windows 95 to Windows ME (I'm still not sure I can live with this--I really liked Win 95, preferring to keep it when Win 98 came out...).
Replaced the 4GB hard drive with a 10GB one.
Took out the 2MB PCI video card and replaced it with a 8MB AGP 4X one. (I have no idea. All I know is the fonts look funny now--but that could be the ME).
Took out the ISA sound card and put in a 16bit Soundblaster audio card.
Replaced the bad power suppy fan; discovered that the CPU fan was bad, too, and also replaced that.
It took him about 14 hours to do all this, including trips to the store for parts. He was going to bill me $700 for his labor, but I talked him into settling for being reimbursed for the stuff he didn't have laying around the garage....
So now my started-life-as-a-used-486 seems to have no remaining original components. Cool.
You may (or may not) have noticed that I have been changing the captions on my adorable little toddle picture over there<-----------------. But I'm pretty much tapped out now. So, in the comments below, please help me out by supplying some witty and amusing captions I can use on a rotating basis. There might even be a prize for the funniest one(s)....
I'm going to leave this at the top for a week so my arrow points at the correct image.
Offer void in Massachusettes and Guam. No warranty is offered or implied. The decision of the judges is final. In the event of a tie, a toad will be ritually sacrificed and its entrails read. No mammals were harmed in the creation of this contest. Eat cookies, they're good for you....
In the event of a real emergency, this blog will either comment on it or ignore it, depending entirely on the capricious mood of the author.
UPDATE: Yay! it works! Yay!
I may need to get some new curtains and matching throw pillows so I don't feel quite so decor-challenged....
and my car's in the shop getting new boots, so I will be blog reading and catching up on Alliance business and perhaps linking to a few choice posts. More anon...
Anyway, the point of my time zone post thingee was that since I'm going to have to change my blog's time zone tonight anyway, I think I'm going to change it to GMT (aka "zulu time"). It's a Munuvian thing, and maybe just experimental anyway. I'll let you know if I decide to change it back....
So--what do you all think of the banner Jennifer made for me?
Cool beans! I just got to
1) delete a comment and
2) ban an ip
it was 188.8.131.52 in case anyone wants to look it up and see who needs to get a life...
No more blogging this morning...I'm reading Bill Whittle's Responsibility. Maybe more when I get home from the Technology Free Zone™...
Also Victor (neé LC Victor) has joined the ranks of the munuvians and can now be found at http://publius.mu.nu/ so adjust your links asap!
UPDATE: Cherry is now a munuvian too!!!!!
I can take a hint... if I'm not out my template in an hour, send cute guys with impressive weapons...
Kevin the Wiz links to a discussion on blogroll segregation. He says: Heck I'll weigh in on that polarizing topic... I'm in favor of being blogrolled any old way. If you put me in your suck-ass bloggers category I'll take it as a compliment.
Well said, Kevin. And I am afraid I must come down as Pro-Segregation here. My blogroll is my reading list...I'm sorry if it hurts your ego if I don't read your site religiously, but there are only so many hours in the day for blog reading when your workplace is Technology Free™-- the sad truth is there really are only 4 or 5 blogs I check every day for new goodies, and if I told you which ones they were I would have to kill you...
Okey dokey, I survived the Template Excusion relatively unscathed (although it was very disappointing that no attractive Firemen or other Rescue Squad hunks were required to extract me) and so my "blogroll" section is now even longer....if it gets to the point where it starts to take you scrolling down into last week's posts, I'll probably have to have a contest or something...
Anyway, check out the new linkages if you get bored with me...there's some good stuff there, I guess, or I wouldn't have favoritized 'em....
UPDATE: When is MT going to get sassenfrassensazzafrazza spell check!??! Auugh! Sorry for any "pongs" (thanks, Tiger!)
Double pings again!!!! Sorry!!! One of these days I'll figure out why it does that (or maybe not...maybe there is no logical reason, just an example of entropy and chaos directed specificly at me by Loki....)
Well I woke up today with every intention of suiting up and heading into my main template to work on my blogroll...but I just had to stop by Pixy Misa's first, and goodness he was busy while I was asleep. Ping storm!
Episode 16 of the Blogdfather is up. Episode 15 was apparently eaten by overzealous bureaucrats at some snarky (LOVE that word! must use it more!) web host place. In place of it, there's this fragment, apparently all that remains of The Lost Episode...
Now, into the template with me.... (send ruggedly-handsome and attractively-buff firemen to rescue me if I'm not back in an hour....)
Anybody know what the deal is with this? :
Ping 'http://rpc.weblogs.com/RPC2' failed: HTTP error: 500 Can't connect to rpc.weblogs.com:80 (Bad hostname 'rpc.weblogs.com')
Ping 'http://ping.blo.gs/' failed: HTTP error: 500 Can't connect to ping.blo.gs:80 (Bad hostname 'ping.blo.gs')
It's Tuesday, and Loyal Readers know what that means--it's Susie's one day off during the week, so in keeping with her policy of procrastination re: homework, laundry, oil changes and bill paying, look for intermittent blogging with chance of hyberbole.....
In the meantime, check out this entry on my test blog....
Sorry! Sorry about that.... all those who got double pings need to contact MT immediately and lodge a complaint.....
Jaboobie is redeemed....and shall be moved from Non-Link status back to regular linkage (just as soon as my galoshes and tennis racket get back from the cleaners--those slugs clinging to the stalagmites were really messy when squished....)
(I may need that non-link spot for He Who Will Not Be Pinged....)
Okey dokey, payback time.....muh ha ha.....
I am now going to ceremoniously de-link those offenders who did not link to Frank yesterday.......
(Give me a minute...I can't find that new mag-lite, and this bee-keepers' helmet I got to ward off the bats really interferes with my vision....I hope I don't accidently change my font or trip over a water buffalo....)
Bye-bye jaboobie! Your page doesn't load right for IE anyway! nahner nahner!
Adios Romulus! You probably don't read me anyway....
Hasta La Vista James.....oh, wait. James has that cool gun pic...maybe he put it up for Frank to enjoy. Ok, we'll forgive James (this once)
Ta Ta Tiger! ......bats!! auugh!!!! run away.......
In keeping with my policy of making every effort to procrastinate working on my homework, avoid doing laundry, and generally being averse to accomplishing anything of note on my lone day off work, look for intermittent blogging with a chance of G.L.*
Before I don my "professional attire" and head off to the salt mines for 12 hours of mediating teenage angst-driven disputes, threading movie projectors and serving popcorn to the semi-washed masses, I would like to point out that I was feeling particularly self-confident this morning and thus, attired in heavy-duty coveralls, lighted miner's helmet and sturdy boots, mag-lite at the ready and baseball bat in hand (for the critters lurking in the darkened recesses), I strode boldly into my template and added several links and logos. (I admit I flinched when I heard the scuttling of rats, but remembering my promise to Victor I did them no harm).
Then, having successfully fended off the bats that dive-bombed me when I accidently stumbled into their lair, I also added the Blogspot Jihad Logo and an Amazon Pay thingee logo. (What the heck, right? May as well find out if any millionaire philanthropists are reading me....)
So, when I get home from work tonight, the contest deadline will have passed, and if I am alert enough I will declare a winner. Tune in tomorrow......
Just a note to my Loyal Readers: Pete, Tiger, Victor, Pixy Misa, et.al., even though tomorrow is my day off, there is a good chance I will not be blogging because I have another paper due for one of my classes, and I cannot wait another minute to dive into the new Harry Potter book.
So, stop by tomorrow to see if Order of the Phoenix is more compelling than my compulsion to blog!
(Cool...a cliffhanger! just like Frank!)
I have been thinking about trying that new-fangled "blogrolling" thingee, but have been reluctant to try it for two reasons:
#1 The instructions on installing it look moderately complicated, and I can only tackle one moderately complicated task per day, otherwise my brain overheats. Since I am fresh off the triumph of uploading pictures to my blog, and still procastinating tackling importing my blogspot archives, as well as a couple of site tweaks that I want to try, I have been putting off attempting to install it.
#2 This is a more philosophical reason. Some sites that I have been to have such long blogrolls that they practically need to be continued on the next page. I don't really like the look of that, and I don't understand how someone can have the time to regularly read all the blogs on those interminable lists. So my blogroll has an entrance requirement: your site has to be interesting enough to make me go into my template and risk its total destruction by hand-entering the code to link to your site. Now, the blogrolling thingee would take away that element of risk, and reduce the honor associated with being on my blogroll, since any old blog could pass the one-click risk-test.
So, Loyal Readers, what do you think? Shall inclusion on my blogroll remain an honor, or should I put "get blogrolling" on my to-do list?
Hurray!!!!! I uploaded a pic to my blog!!! Woo-hoo!!! Set off the fireworks!!!
Okay, okay, I'll settle down (but I am excited...this is another giant leap for technologically-impaired womankind!)
I have to do another one!!!!
This is me modeling my new coat...I was a little younger than I am now.
That was so cool I have to do another one!
I always call this picture Victim of Torture...(because my hair is not naturally curly, that's why!)
Yes, Glenn, I am simulcasting...mostly for Pete, since he seems either too busy to check out the new PP, or else is so totally repulsed by the whole teal/salmon thing that he's still reading (and commenting) at my blogspot blog....
(I love you, Pete! You will always be my First Loyal Reader and Commentor!)
Anyway, now that the evil papers have been slain, and my Assistant Manager is due back from vacation tomorrow, I should have a little more free time to finish up the move to MT.
I'm still packing things up at blogger, and rearranging the furniture at MT, so pardon the mess....
Anyone who likes the fact that I am now using moveable type, please go to Ambient Irony and thank the unbelievably generous and thoughtful and kind Pixy Misa for not only setting me up with MT, but also stoicly enduring being pestered with my neverending stream of "How do I...(insert stupid question here)?"
Pixy, you are the BEST and I will taunt anyone who says otherwise...
And as long as I am acknowledging my Loyal Readers, I would like to thank Captain Michael Singleton, not only because he was the first Loyal Reader to ever email me, but also because were it not for men like him defending our country from all threats foreign and domestic, the world would be a scarier place today. Captain Singleton, thank you for your sacrifices on our behalf.
Just a quick note to tell all my Loyal Readers that I copied and pasted my old blogger posts to one long post dated June 1.
Just click on the June 1st on the calander, and scroll down to the date you want to read (if any).
I know--it's more labor intensive for you than for me, but I will do it right one of these days, once Steve is back from vacation and there are no huge projects due for class.
Now go read Frank. I'm sure he's more interesting than I am anyway!
Okey dokey, if you have any comments on the decor, please leave them on this post.
And if anyone knows how I can get rid of that annoyingly bright white behind my blog title, I would appreciate advice.
One of the little things that can make life seem too unfair sometimes is having to make coffee before you've had coffee.
Another is waking up early on your day off, just because your body is used to getting up early.
A third is a chilly drizzle too early on your day off before the coffee is brewed.
I could go on, but I think the coffee is done.....
Cool!!!!! I have colors!!!! Hurray!!!!!!
This is kinda fun, now that I know where to fiddle.
I have no idea what CSS even means, tho.
Now I need to figure out where to change the white background of the whole page.
I wish I had more time to play!
Ok, so I found webmonkey's list of color hex codes for html. I still don't know where to put them.
Maybe it's the sleep deprivation effecting my brain power.
Hey...does this thing have spell check?
See, this is what I was afraid of...I am trying to read the online instructions for moveable type, and I can't find anything that tells me how to do what I want to do.
For example, while the fonts are perfect, I would like to change the font colors. I would also like to change the background color. But I cannot figure out WHERE this is supposed to be done. I'm assuming one of the templates, but which one? and where do make my alterations? and where do I find the color codes?
The manual also doesn't say where the links go. IP banning is very useful, I am sure, but I am technologically impaired!!!! I need that little button to put the italics tags in for me!!!!
On the other hand, it is WAY cool to have titles to the entries, and if I could just figure out how to do the basic stuff (like where to paste the site meter code etc) I think I could like this ....
But they need to get me a book...Moveable Type for Dummies would be just fine.....
Thanks, Pixy! I have no idea what the heck I am doing, as I just got home from another 12 hour day at the movies. So I am just typing in an attempt to see if I can make a coherent sentence. Now I think I will post this and see what it looks like.
